What if your three days include the flights?

Do not copy the route above into three calendar days. Stay in Reykjavík and choose one major day trip so the airport days remain usable and safe.

Why this route stops at Vík

Jökulsárlón is a superb destination, but it is not a sensible addition to a first trip that also includes the Golden Circle in three full days.

Reaching the glacier lagoon and returning west would replace the flexible final day with a long southeast out-and-back. Choose the seven-day itinerary when Jökulsárlón is a priority, or use all three days for the South Coast and accept the long return.

Book the overnight sequence first

Reserve the three route nights before adding activities. A poorly placed booking can add unnecessary driving to a short trip.

  1. 01
Confirm that all three days are complete sightseeing days, with an arrival night before Day 1.
  2. 02
Book Night 1 near Hella or Hvolsvöllur and Night 2 in Vík.
  3. 03
Book Night 3 in Reykjavík, Keflavík, or another southwest base that keeps departure simple.
  4. 04
Choose the car and cancellation terms for the season.
  5. 05
Add no more than one optional activity after the overnight route is secure.

If you drive this route in winter

The overnight sequence can still work, but three full summer-style stop lists cannot. Keep each day easy to shorten.

  • 01
Day 1leave Reykjavík early and remove the post-Gullfoss option.
  • 02
Day 2keep Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, and Vík as the core; remove coastal detours first.
  • 03
Day 3return west directly whenever wind, visibility, road conditions, or daylight reduce the margin.
  • 04
Do not assume access to Reynisfjara, Dyrhólaey, waterfall paths, or glacier areas.
  • 05
Check Umferðin, the Icelandic Met Office, and SafeTravel before every departure.

Frequently asked questions

Are 3 days enough for Iceland?

Three full sightseeing days are enough for a focused Golden Circle and western South Coast route. They are not enough for the Ring Road, and three calendar days with flights require a shorter Reykjavík-base plan.

Can I reach Jökulsárlón in three days?

Yes only if the trip focuses on the South Coast and accepts a long return. This first-trip route includes the Golden Circle instead and stops at Vík to keep the pace realistic.

Where should I stay each night?

Sleep near Hella or Hvolsvöllur after Day 1, in Vík after Day 2, and in Reykjavík or the southwest after Day 3. You also need a Reykjavík arrival night before the route begins.

Do I need a car for this itinerary?

Yes for this exact overnight sequence. Without a car, stay in Reykjavík and combine separate guided Golden Circle and South Coast day trips only when you truly have two full tour days.

Is this itinerary suitable in winter?

It can be, but it is not a fixed winter promise. Check official road, weather, and safety information each morning, reserve flexible accommodation, and remove coastal options before extending the drive.
