Öxarfjörður is not a single landmark that delivers one obvious payoff. It is a wide fjord area where the value comes from a quieter coastal rhythm: views over pale water, black-sand edges, low wetlands, birdlife, Kópasker village context, and the sense that North Iceland opens out before the road turns inland.

Add Öxarfjörður when a north-coast day needs texture between bigger stops, especially after Tjörnes or before Ásbyrgi. Skip it when the route is trying to force Húsavík, Dettifoss, Mývatn, and multiple canyon walks into one tight day.

Most visitors meet the fjord while moving through North Iceland rather than making it the whole reason for the day. Coming from Húsavík, Tjörnes gives the coastal approach. Hringsbjarg opens the view across the fjord. Kópasker gives the eastern-shore village pause. South of the coast, Ásbyrgi and Jökulsárgljúfur pull the route into canyon country.

That geography makes Öxarfjörður useful on a slower Diamond Circle road trip, but it can weaken a rushed one.
