Kirkjufell and the waterfalls; light and conditions vary with the departure.
Photo 1 of 7: Kirkjufell mountain and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls beneath a warm evening sky.The experience
Leave Reykjavík for a full day on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where the scenery shifts from geometric basalt columns to coastal cliffs, dark beaches and the slopes of a glacier-capped volcano. Travel in a small group with a local driver-guide, with time out of the minibus to look around along the way.
The route brings together Gerðuberg, Ytri Tunga, Arnarstapi and Kirkjufell. Snæfellsjökull forms the backdrop to the western peninsula when visibility allows. Lunch at a local restaurant is included, so there is a proper meal break between the outdoor stops.
This is a sightseeing day rather than a glacier hike or a climb up Kirkjufell. Expect a long outing from Reykjavík, short walks at the stops and changing coastal weather. The guide may adjust the route to the conditions; wildlife sightings and clear glacier views cannot be promised.
Kirkjufell & the coast
Waterfalls, basalt formations and a mountain rising beside the fjord.
Look for seals
Watch the shoreline at Ytri Tunga without disturbing the animals.
Lunch is included
Break for a local meal at a restaurant in Arnarstapi.
Your day, stop by stop
Pickup in Reykjavík
Join at your selected Reykjavík bus stop. Pickup begins at 08:30 and can take until around 09:00; be ready for the whole window.
A break in Borgarnes
Pause on the journey west, with an opportunity to buy coffee or extra snacks before heading onto the peninsula.
Gerðuberg basalt columns
See a wall of tall, closely packed basalt columns. Their repeating shapes are one of the day’s clearest examples of the peninsula’s volcanic landscape.

Seal watching at Ytri Tunga
Look across the rocks and shallows for seals resting by the shore. Keep a respectful distance and follow the guide’s instructions; the animals come and go freely.

The cliffs of Arnarstapi
Step out beside the fishing village for views of weathered basalt, sea arches and the Atlantic coastline. Seabirds are seasonal, and the walking conditions depend on the weather.

A local restaurant lunch
Settle in for the meal included in your tour. The supplier describes local dishes, including lamb soup. Tell us about allergies or dietary requirements before booking so suitability can be checked; a particular menu or substitution is not guaranteed.

Snæfellsjökull & Djúpalónssandur
Continue around the glacier-capped volcano and into the national park’s coastal scenery. Where access and conditions allow, visit Djúpalónssandur’s dark pebble beach. This stop may be inaccessible in winter. Glacier views depend on visibility; the tour does not go onto the ice.

Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss
Finish the peninsula’s highlights with the distinctive mountain and nearby waterfalls. Enjoy the views from the visitor area; this is a photo stop, not an ascent of Kirkjufell.

Return to Reykjavík
Travel back to your designated drop-off after a day of coastal stops and mountain scenery. Allow approximately 11 hours for the tour and avoid tight onward connections.
This is the planned sightseeing route, not a guaranteed timetable. Stop order and access may change with weather, road conditions and daylight. Djúpalónssandur may be omitted when access is unsafe, especially in winter.

How long is the day?
Allow approximately 11 hours. The route combines substantial driving with outdoor stops and a restaurant lunch. Weather and road conditions can affect the return time.
What meal is included?
Lunch with local food at a restaurant is included. The supplier describes lamb soup and other local dishes. Drinks and any food beyond lunch are extra. Ask us to check allergies and dietary requirements before booking.
Do we walk on Snæfellsjökull?
No. This is a sightseeing tour around the peninsula. You may see the glacier-capped volcano when the weather is clear, but glacier walking and specialist glacier equipment are not included.
Will we definitely see seals?
No. Ytri Tunga is a seal-watching stop, but wildlife sightings depend on the animals and the conditions. Give seals space and follow your guide’s advice.
Is Djúpalónssandur always included?
It is part of the supplier’s planned route when accessible. It may be omitted in winter or whenever access and conditions make the stop unsafe.
Can children join?
The supplier lists adult, youth aged 6–12 and child aged 0–5 categories, with no minimum age. A child seat can be selected at no extra charge; you must give the child’s age and height. It is a long day of driving and short outdoor walks.

The supplier requires at least four adults across all bookings for the tour to operate and may also cancel for unsafe conditions. If the supplier cancels, you can accept an offered alternative or receive a full refund.
